Note: this lead was originally published on October 15, 2026 (Blizzard development notes); as of publication this remains the latest round of racial changes.

Blizzard shipped a large racial-ability update to the WoW: Forever beta, and the direction is unmistakable: the old weapon-tied racials are gone, replaced with crit-themed effects. The changes are live with the new build.

Weapon specializations replaced

  • Human: Sword Specialization → Ruthless: increases critical strike chance with all spells and abilities by 1%;
  • Orc: Axe Specialization → Savage: 1% increased critical strike chance (previously required an axe);
  • Dwarf: Mace Specialization → Earth Fury: 2% increased critical damage and healing.

Veterans will recognize the significance: the classic "play Orc for axes, Human for swords" race-class lock-in is dismantled. Racial strength no longer depends on the weapon in your hands, making weapon swaps and build changes freer.

Tauren: two reworks, two cooldown cuts

  • Endurance: now grants 2% increased critical damage and healing (was 1% hit chance);
  • Plainsrunning: also grants 3% increased mounted movement speed (stacking with other increases), but now requires a minimum distance moved per second — per the developers' notes, "stutter-stepping is no longer sufficient to maintain the effect", a real nerf to kiting feel;
  • Cultivation cooldown reduced to 15 minutes (was 60); War Stomp cooldown reduced to 90 seconds (was 2 minutes).

Skyborne buffed across the board

Wind Blessed haste bonus increased to 3% (was 1%); Skysight and Read Leyline are now castable while moving (Read Leyline minimum duration 20 → 30 seconds); Walk on Air cooldown reduced to 90 seconds (was 2 minutes). Elemental Convergence and Leyline spawn locations increased across most Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor zones.

Other highlights from the same notes

A new tutorial experience for new players; a new "Auto Attack/Auto Shot" setting (Hunters switch automatically, gamepad supported); fixes for overly bright fog at lower shadow settings, Horde characters holding the Night Watchman's Torch, and more.

Player impact: the "correct answer" for race choice has changed — crit-themed races (Human, Orc, Dwarf, Tauren) gain weight for DPS and healing, with exact strength pending further builds and playtesting. Leveling players picking a race should re-check our race recommendations; ongoing tracking lives in changes.
