Race choice in World of Warcraft: Forever actually matters — racials add crit, movement speed, crowd-control cleansing, and six brand-new race/class combos changed the old calculus. But most guides out there start from the race and ask "what can it play?" This post flips it around: pick your class first, then compare the races and settle your professions in the same pass, with a shortlist per class and one big cheat-sheet table at the end.

How to read this guide:

  • Racial data and the class matrix come from our Forever races page (beta 1.60.1, compiled September 27, 2026, same dataset as our racial traits vs Vanilla comparison). In-game values always win.
  • The "professions" note in each section follows the same source base as our profession pairing guide (the six benefit mechanics and the 12-profession table live there).
  • Ratings are labeled in two tiers: data (what a race has — verifiable) and our pick (how to choose — our judgment, informed by beta community testing; treat it as opinion).
  • Beta runs until October 21 and Forever launches November 4 (CN realms November 5) — anything can still be retuned.

Three things to know before comparing races

1. Forever added six combos that didn't exist in Vanilla: Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, and Undead Paladin. The Horde finally gets paladins, the Alliance gets shaman — old "this race can't be that class" assumptions are dead in these six spots.

2. Hard constraints remain: Night Elves are still limited to their original five classes (warrior/hunter/rogue/priest/druid) — no Night Elf mage. For the Skyborne variants, mage is exclusive to the Alliance variant (High Order) and shaman to the Horde variant (Windshaper); neither variant can play warlock.

3. Forever reworked the racials themselves: Orc's Hardiness went from a stun resist chance to -20% stun duration, Will of the Forsaken no longer grants immunity but cleanses fear/charm/sleep, and Tauren got Plainsrunning back from the 2004 beta cutting-room floor (movement speed builds up to +30% while running). Don't copy your Classic-era memory — read the data below.

Warrior — every race, decision paralysis included

RaceFactionHighlights
HumanAllianceSword Specialization (+2% sword crit), Will to Survive (escape stun)
DwarfAllianceStoneform (clear bleed/poison/disease + 10% physical reduction for 8s), Mace Specialization
Night ElfAllianceElune's Light (+10% crit for 15s), Quickness (+2% dodge, +2% speed)
GnomeAllianceEscape Artist (breaks roots/slows for 5s), Expansive Mind (+5% rage pool)
OrcHordeBlood Fury (+10% attack power for 15s), Hardiness (-20% stun duration), Axe Specialization
TaurenHordeWar Stomp (2s AoE stun), Endurance (+5% health, +1% hit), Plainsrunning (speed builds to +30%)
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (break fear/charm), Touch of the Grave (lifesteal on hit)
TrollHordeBerserking (+10% attack speed for ~10s)
SkyborneBothWind Blessed (+1% haste); Windshaper adds Skysight (+10% speed)

Our pick: PvE damage — Orc (Blood Fury is a real 15-second burst) or Human (swords carry you all game, +2% crit is the steadiest). Tanking — Tauren (+5% health) or Dwarf (Stoneform doubles as an extra dispel). PvP — Orc or Human.

Professions: Blacksmithing + Mining — self-supplied plate and weapons, the 203 new recipes include repair tools, and the Sharpening Wheel camp object buffs the group's attack power. Warriors have no self-heal — First Aid is mandatory (healing potions now live there).

→ Warrior builds in the builds library, change list on the warrior changes page.

Paladin — the Horde finally has one, and Undead fits suspiciously well

RaceFactionHighlights
HumanAllianceWill to Survive (escape stun), The Human Spirit (+5% spirit for mana regen)
DwarfAllianceStoneform — the paladin already brings cleanses; this is a second layer plus damage reduction
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (fear/charm cleanse — the paladin's most hated controls), Cannibalize (leveling sustain), Touch of the Grave (lifesteal that suits a melee grinder)

Our pick: Alliance tanking — Dwarf; generalist — Human. Horde players have no choice, but the fit is excellent: fear cleanse, free sustain, lifesteal. If you want to try the new Horde paladin, first-picking it is safe.

Professions: gear-first Blacksmithing + Mining, raid-consumable Alchemy + Herbalism. Paladins self-heal, so First Aid stays a leveling convenience.

→ Paladin builds · Paladin changes

Hunter — the leveling king; races only affect how smooth

RaceFactionHighlights
DwarfAllianceBig Game Hunter (+5% damage to beasts — hunters grind beasts all game), Stoneform as an emergency cleanse
Night ElfAllianceShadowmeld (drop combat, set ambushes, vanish in PvP), Quickness
HumanAllianceNew combo; Will to Survive for PvP
TrollHordeBerserking (+10% attack speed), Beast Slaying (+5% vs beasts), Regeneration
TaurenHordeEndurance (+5% health), War Stomp (panic button on grabby mobs)
OrcHordeBlood Fury (+10% attack power), Hardiness
Windshaper SkyborneHordeSkysight (+10% speed — kiting feel)

Our pick: leveling — Dwarf (Alliance) or Troll (Horde); "vs beasts" racials have their highest utilization on a hunter. PvP — Night Elf (Shadowmeld) or Tauren (War Stomp). Troll's attack-speed burst is real DPS in the shooting rotation too.

Professions: self-supply Leatherworking + Skinning (leather until mail at 40, and LW's 289 new recipes are the largest set in game), PvP Engineering + Mining. Pet tanking + Feign Death give hunters the lowest First Aid pressure of any class.

→ Hunter builds · Hunter changes

Rogue — an arms race of control and anti-control

RaceFactionHighlights
Night ElfAllianceShadowmeld (a pseudo-vanish mid-fight), Elune's Light (+10% crit burst), Quickness
GnomeAllianceEscape Artist (breaks roots/slows — a second life against leg-lock comps)
HumanAlliancePerception (detect stealth for 20s — rogue mirror-match radar), Sword Specialization
DwarfAllianceStoneform (clears bleeds — great against DoT rogues)
OrcHordeHardiness (-20% stun duration — shorter Kidney Shots), Blood Fury, Axe Specialization
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (break fear/charm — insolence vs warlocks and priests)
TrollHordeBerserking

Our pick: PvP — Gnome or Night Elf for Alliance; Orc for Horde (Hardiness + Blood Fury covers both sides of the fight). PvE — Night Elf or Orc. Human's Perception only matters in rogue mirrors.

Professions: Engineering + Mining — bombs and gadgets add exactly the burst and control rogues lack. No self-heal, so First Aid is mandatory; Skinning + Leatherworking is the budget alternative.

→ Rogue builds · Rogue changes

Priest — self-cleanse for healing, fear-break for Shadow

RaceFactionHighlights
DwarfAllianceStoneform — some dungeon debuffs become self-service, less work for the healer (you)
GnomeAllianceNew combo; Eureka (next 3 spells cheaper and +10% effective — a healing burst window), Escape Artist
HumanAllianceThe Human Spirit (+5% spirit), Perception
Night ElfAllianceElune's Light (small Shadow burst), Shadowmeld
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (core for Shadow PvP), Cannibalize
TrollHordeBerserking (+10% casting speed — heals and damage both)

Our pick: healing-first — Dwarf or Gnome; Shadow/PvP — Undead; Horde raiding — Troll. Human's spirit bonus is the weakest fit given Forever's reworked spirit economy (see our racial comparison).

Professions: Tailoring + Enchanting — self-supplied cloth + bags, and Forever's enchanters can enchant rings (a Vanilla-era first); the tailor-DE loop levels both for near-zero cost.

→ Priest builds · Priest changes

Shaman — the Alliance gets one option, but it's decent

RaceFactionHighlights
DwarfAllianceThe only Alliance shaman (new combo); Stoneform pairs oddly well with a debuff-management class, Mace Specialization
OrcHordeBlood Fury (+10% attack power and spell power — Enhancement and Elemental both), Hardiness, Shatter Curse (8s curse immunity)
TaurenHordeWar Stomp, Endurance
TrollHordeBerserking, Regeneration
Windshaper SkyborneHordeShaman is the Windshaper-exclusive class; +1% haste, +10% speed

Our pick: Alliance players have no choice, and Dwarf is no punishment. Horde damage — Orc (works for both specs); healing — Troll or Tauren. Windshaper shaman is a lore treat with plain racials.

Professions: Leatherworking + Skinning (leather-to-mail self-supply, Tanning Rack unlocks advanced recipes) or Herbalism + Alchemy (consumable independence).

→ Shaman builds · Shaman changes

Mage — Gnome's Eureka rewrote the old answer

RaceFactionHighlights
GnomeAllianceEureka (next 3 spells cheaper and +10% damage — a three-spell burst window), Escape Artist, Expansive Mind (+5% mana)
HumanAllianceNew combo; Will to Survive, spirit regen
High Order SkyborneAllianceMage is High Order-exclusive; Read Ley Line (+100% health/mana regen for 15s — sustain specialty)
TrollHordeBerserking (+10% casting speed)
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (classic PvP counterplay), Cannibalize
OrcHordeNew combo; Blood Fury (+10% spell power), Hardiness

Our pick: damage — Gnome (Alliance) or Troll (Horde); PvP — Gnome or Undead. Orc mage is the most straightforward new combo on the list (+10% spell power). High Order Skyborne is the sustain ceiling if you like standing still and nuking.

Professions: Tailoring + Enchanting — bags, cloth gear and ring enchants on three lines; mage-made food plus the camp cooking bonus feeds the whole group for free.

→ Mage builds · Mage changes

Warlock — the one class Skyborne can't play

RaceFactionHighlights
GnomeAllianceEureka (+10% damage window), Expansive Mind (+5% mana — for a class whose health bar is a mana pool, more is more)
HumanAllianceWill to Survive (life against melee divers)
OrcHordeBlood Fury (+10% spell power), Hardiness, Shatter Curse
UndeadHordeWill of the Forsaken (mirrors and anti-control), Cannibalize
TrollHordeNew combo; Berserking (+10% casting speed)

Our pick: damage — Gnome (Alliance) or Orc (Horde); PvP — Undead or Human. Note: neither Skyborne variant can play warlock — the only class excluded from the new race's roster.

Professions: Tailoring + Enchanting; Life Tap plus First Aid bandages/potions brings potion spending to nearly zero.

→ Warlock builds · Warlock changes

Druid — the Night Elf vs Tauren classic

RaceFactionHighlights
Night ElfAllianceThe only standard Alliance option: Shadowmeld (a second stealth opener for feral), Elune's Light, Quickness, Wisp Spirit (+75% graveyard sprint)
TaurenHordeThe only standard Horde option: War Stomp, Endurance, Plainsrunning (up to +30% speed — another mobility layer on top of forms)
SkyborneBothDruid is available on both variants: Walk on Air (slow fall), +1% haste

Our pick: nothing to compare — Night Elf for Alliance, Tauren for Horde. Night Elf leans PvP flexibility; Tauren leans PvE tankiness and mobility. Skyborne druid is a flavor pick with plain racials.

Professions: Herbalism + Alchemy (Bountiful Harvest doubles rare herb yields — consumable independence) or Leatherworking + Skinning (leather self-supply), depending on whether you want potion freedom or gear money saved.

→ Druid builds · Druid changes

Are the Skyborne worth first-picking?

Both variants share Wind Blessed (+1% haste) and Elemental Insight (+5% vs elementals); High Order adds Read Ley Line (15s of doubled regen), Windshaper adds Skysight (+10% speed).

Our pick: the Skyborne racial kit is "universal but plain" — +1% haste works for everyone, but no class extracts more value from it than from the tailored racial of an older race (Gnome's Eureka, Orc's Blood Fury). The real value is lore and looks: a new race, exclusive class branches (mage/shaman), and the singing frogs you can grab before leaving the isle (see our secrets compilation). Min-maxers pick old races; lore fans pick Skyborne. No need to force it.
