Good news for solo players: on the official WoW: Forever podcast, Blizzard confirmed the battleground matchmaking rules — solo-queued players will not be matched against premades.
The rules
- Solo queue enters the battleground against other solo players; no more "a 5-stack steamrolls pugs" matches;
- Premades only face premades: full groups queuing together play other full groups;
- Small groups are covered too: senior game designer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield said a small-group option is in the works, sized around 2-3 players — the exact number is not final.
There is precedent, and one unknown
The approach was trialed in Classic's Season of Discovery Phase 2: after matchmaking changes, premades ran into pugs far less often. But SoD's rule had an important footnote — after sitting in the queue long enough, the restrictions would relax (otherwise solo players couldn't find games). Whether Forever keeps that queue-time relaxation is unknown. That detail decides the late-night, low-population experience, and is worth tracking.
What it means for each kind of player
- Solo queuers: fairness improves visibly; the "check the other side for a 5-stack first" anxiety is gone;
- Organized groups: opponents get stronger, so winning takes real coordination — good for the battleground ecosystem;
- Duo/trio friends: wait for the small-group option (size per future announcements) rather than pulling friends into a 5-stack for now.
Details (group size cap, queue relaxation) are subject to official follow-ups; we will track them in changes.
