Before you read: this piece was filed on October 31, 2026, before WoW: Forever's global launch (Nov 4 PST / Nov 5 Beijing time). It catalogs the places where Blizzard's own statements collided with Blizzard's own changes: every item carries dates and sources on both sides, with single-source relays, datamines and community statistics flagged separately. This is not a "Blizzard is doomed" screed — five weeks of dense Beta iteration show a team that does listen to feedback. The problem is that the founding promises of the class gameplay (modernize or not, how build-switching works, what racials are for, whether every spec is guaranteed viable) changed answers several times in one month. The article is based on the 36 Forever class-gameplay stories among the 40 Forever items collected by this site between Sep 26 and Oct 31.

2. Contradiction 1: "No modernization," yet dual spec ships day one
Oct 13, TechRadar interview (via Wowhead news 383378):
Blizzard made clear it will not modernize Forever's classes — no overhaul of the classic framework players know. The goal is "simpler but engaging depth," and they like the pacing and speed of the original combat.
What Blizzard itself shipped or confirmed that same month:
- Dual spec available at launch (Oct 28 IGN) — dual spec is the signature class-modernization feature of WotLK 3.1, and the Sep 30 deep dives had already written it into Forever's framework;
- The retail Cooldown Manager, a statistics pane, Inspect improvements (Sep 26 dev notes) — products of retail's "addon disarmament";
- Classic buffs moved from party-only to raid-wide within 45 yd (Oct 16 build) — Moonkin, Leader of the Pack, Trueshot Aura, five shaman totems and Battle Shout all switched to the post-WotLK buff model. On Oct 6 this site had recorded "party-only scope" as the standing design (party vs raid buffs); ten days later Blizzard changed it itself (raid-wide buffs);
- The classic 2-second "heartbeat" tick removed entirely (Oct 27 Polygon feature) — in the same feature, classic lead designer Tim Jones recalls that Classic's only design directive was "change nothing";
- Downranking nerfed (Oct 10), powershifting removed (Oct 7), multi-weapon same-GCD swapping back, Discord voice in group tools, an auto-attack toggle (Sep 26/Oct 9 notes).
The contradiction: the "no modernization" line was issued days apart from modernization on both sides. It reads as a PR answer to the "will Forever become retail?" argument, not as a design boundary — the boundary itself kept moving on Oct 16 (buff model) and Oct 30 (216-talent hotfix). The IGN interview is not self-consistent either: dual spec ships day one, on-the-fly switching is refused, yet a "convenience plan" is promised and a third spec is "not ruled out" — a week before launch, the build-switching experience still had no settled shape (IGN detail).
3. Contradiction 2: the cost of switching builds changed twice in two weeks
| Date | Official position | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 26 | Beta price experiment: first respec 1 silver, 5 gold within an hour (explicitly Beta-only) | Dev notes (detail) |
| Sep 30 | Framework: respec at trainers, dual spec unlocks at 40 | Deep dive (detail) |
| Oct 12 | Podcast: dual spec "currently 40... maybe mischievously 30? We'll see" | Podcast ep. 3 (detail) |
| Oct 13 | "Respec prices climb quickly and reset weekly" — think before you switch | TechRadar (detail) |
| Oct 28 | Dual spec at launch; no on-the-fly switching; convenience plan "has ideas and plans"; third spec not excluded | IGN (detail) |
The contradiction: on Oct 13 "expensive respecs" was the final answer given to media; fifteen days later it became "two free loadouts at launch, more convenience maybe coming." The cost model for switching builds flipped inside the last two weeks before launch — and the dual-spec unlock level was still wobbling between 40 and "maybe 30."
4. Contradiction 3: racials re-rolled three times in 11 days, and the "final" needed an addendum
The hardest-evidence group: all three documents are official, first-hand.
Round one (Oct 15 dev notes): a clear direction — "goodbye weapon-bound racials, hello crit." Human/orc/dwarf weapon specs all became crit racials (Ruthless/Savage/Earth Fury), Tauren Endurance became crit damage and Plainsrunning gained +3% mount speed (overhaul detail).
Round two (Oct 26 "final"): half the crit direction reversed (finals detail):
| Race | Oct 15 direction | Oct 26 final |
|---|---|---|
| Orc | Savage: +1% crit to spells and skills | Savage removed, classic Command (+5% pet damage) returns |
| Dwarf | Earth Fury: +2% crit damage and healing | Earth Fury removed, replaced by 1% hit |
| Human | Ruthless crit (briefly 2% in an interim build) | Crit cut back to 1%; spirit 5%→10% |
| Tauren | Plainsrunning +3% mount speed | No longer boosts mount speed; Endurance finalized as pure +5% health |
| Skyborne | Wind-Blessed 3% haste | Cut to 2%; new Attuned/Charged mechanics |
Round three (Oct 27 blue post): one day after the "final," community manager Kaivax posted the missing items on floor 8 of the same pinned thread, with the reason "some additions that were intended to be listed" — they forgot (addendum detail). Missing: the entire troll and undead sections, plus orc Blood Fury's number — whose cooldown had gone 2→3 minutes on Oct 16 and now went 3→2, a full A→B→A round trip inside 11 days. The same addendum added a "removed upon entering a raid" rule for Skyborne charges, and exposed one more seam: the undead 25s internal cooldown was logged as "Touch of the Dead" in the Oct 16 notes but "Touch of the Grave" in the addendum — Blizzard's own two lists disagreed on the spell's name.
Prologue: on Sep 26 the gnome racial Eureka! had already been flattened from up to 50% resource discount to a flat 10% (beta tuning detail). In just over a month, the role of racials was reset two and a half times.
The contradiction: racials are the first layer of choosing a class playstyle. Direction set, reversed, patched, and the "final" needed a next-day addendum — there was no settled answer for what racials are for; it was tuned until the clock ran out.
5. Contradiction 4: "no spec will be unplayable" vs. the axe five days before launch
Oct 14, Inven Global interview (via Wowhead news 383382):
Blizzard promised that no spec will be made unplayable or useless — each doesn't need to be optimal everywhere, but should have a reason to "bring it to specific content."
What followed:
- Beta reality (Forever Open tournament finals, Oct 26, level-30 combat): warlock 79% win rate, including both finalists; mage 25% and warrior 27% at the bottom (tournament detail; a community event, not endorsed by Blizzard);
- Oct 30/31, five days before launch: the live servers took the largest talent hotfix of the whole cycle — the Reddit datamine relayed on the forums was titled "216 talents." Feral druid Berserk removed from the tree, Wild Growth given a 3-second base cast, a Retribution talent removed, six new Paladin talents across three specs. The forum thread hit 82 posts overnight with not a single blue response. Player quote: "Firing from the hip like this 5 days from launch is just insane"; another thread was titled "Bait and switch?" (tree overhaul detail);
- The same list contained zero entries for rogues and shamans — not even a "rogues are fine." The community replied with "Consider deleting rogues from the game" and "Who is the rogue class dev?", to the same silence;
- Two days earlier (Oct 28, while players were reserving names and locking races): Aspect of the Hawk cut 32%–51% across ranks, Trueshot Aura cut 40%–50% (hunter hotfix detail). Note that Trueshot Aura had been made raid-wide on Oct 16 — first made raid-wide, then cut in half twelve days later, two official moves in opposite directions on the same ability.
The contradiction: the promise that "every spec has a reason to be brought" coexists with tree-wide rewrites five days out and class silence. Players had no way to tell which sentence was operative.
6. Contradiction 5: leveling XP reversed direction in five days
- Oct 9 dev notes: dungeon kill XP raised ~20%, group XP returned to classic per-player math — "most players' dungeon experience will increase significantly" (notes detail);
- Oct 14 Inven interview: the team doesn't want players spending 1–60 in dungeons — "WoW is a social game, players should make memories in the world" — and the concrete action was "we recently nerfed dungeon quest XP and buffed monster XP" (Inven detail).
The contradiction: for the same goal (leveling pacing), Blizzard buffed dungeon leveling on Oct 9 and pulled weight back to the world on Oct 14 — opposite directions, five days apart. Players had just re-planned their routes around "dungeon XP up" when the answer changed.
7. Contradiction 6: "we like the original pacing" — after removing the original's core techniques
The interviews stress preserving the original's rhythm and combat speed. Yet the core techniques every classic 1–60 player took for granted were dismantled one by one:
| Classic technique | Forever's treatment | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Powershifting (macro-driven cat energy) | Removed outright, replaced by the priced Shifting Power talent; Tiger's Fury and King of the Jungle removed with it | Sep 30 deep dive, Oct 7 analysis (detail) |
| Downranking (mana savings / trigger fishing / overheal control) | Officially nerfed: low-rank spells lose spell power benefit and proc chance; rank-1 Frostbolt at 60 has 0% Frostbite | Oct 10 official note (detail) |
| Party-buff seat assignments (totems/Shout/LotP by group) | Made raid-wide within 45 yd | Oct 16 build (detail) |
Add the removed heartbeat tick, the reworked hunter pet system (pets scale with gear, one signature ability per family), potion and enchant use inside Druid forms — the building blocks of the "original feel" are being systematically swapped. The contradiction is not whether each change is good (many fix genuine pain points); it is that there was never a published list of what would be kept and what would be changed: by the time "no modernization" was said on Oct 13, powershifting and downranking were already gone.
8. Contradiction 7: arenas — from an in-game tease to "they ruin the vibe"
- Sep 28: in the goblin outpost Powderfuse Port on the new Riverglades map, official level content placed a caged arena NPC whose line is "come back when this place is up and running" — Wowhead asked the same day "Could Arenas be Coming to WoW: Forever?" (that day's digest);
- Oct 27: the Polygon feature records that the team explicitly ruled out two things at the concept stage — arenas and flying mounts — because they ruin the vibe, "not chill enough, not grounded" (Polygon detail).
The contradiction: the boundary of the gameplay (arenas or not) went from an in-game hint to an explicit rejection within a month. This one is medium-strength — whether the NPC was a deliberate teaser or set dressing was never clarified — but it fits the pattern: boundaries drawn by events, not drawn first and built after.
9. Contradiction 8: "fix priority issues before launch" — changes confirmed by player datamining instead
- Oct 23 thank-you note: after the Beta, the team enters a focused period "addressing priority issues and the game service itself" for a good state at launch (thanks detail);
- What actually happened: the Oct 28 (hunter/alchemy) and Oct 30 (talent trees) pre-launch hotfixes never appeared in the official development notes. Wowhead's own caveat on both items: "not confirmed in development notes, may be outdated data, or are subject to change." Player confirmation that the changes were live came from a forum post — "In today's patch Blizzard got rid of the Twist of Light talent" — i.e., live-client testing;
- Add Kaivax's "intended to be listed" addendum on Oct 27, and in launch week alone the completeness of official change records failed twice.
The contradiction: against the posture of "a classic home, stable expectations," the most basic communication floor — a complete changelog — could not be held. For a server marketed as a "permanent home," the cost of answering "what changed?" was outsourced to dataminers and forum threads.
10. How to read this list (important)
Roundups drift into venting easily; here are the evidence boundaries:
- Single-source relays: the Oct 28 hunter hotfix and the Oct 30 tree changes are currently Wowhead-only relays (self-flagged as unconfirmed by dev notes), with live-client corroboration from players. This article flags them per item; conclusions should not exceed the relay — whether feral Berserk was deleted or became a baseline skill, no source says;
- Community statistics: the tournament win rates are level-30 Beta samples from a community event, not endorsed by Blizzard. They show balance had not converged; they are not a launch-balance verdict;
- Don't mix in retail: the Oct 27 US batch "Subtlety -8%, Feral/Fire +5%" is retail 12.1.x tuning and has nothing to do with Forever (the timing is close; our coverage drew the line explicitly, retail tuning report). Clipped mashups of the two are already circulating;
- Forward-looking ≠ promised: the account-wide bank "in the not-too-distant future," the respec convenience plan "has ideas and plans," a third spec "not ruled out" — keep the original qualifiers when citing; our PC Gamer interview detail annotates each verbatim.
11. What it adds up to
Across all eight contradictions the pattern is consistent: the pace of change is driven by feedback and test data, the messaging lags the changes, and promises run ahead of plans.
- "No modernization" was a statement answering an argument, made after powershifting was already gone and dual spec was already in the framework;
- The racial "finals" answered "how do I pick a race," then leaked, then got patched;
- "No spec will be unplayable" is a design vision that the 216-talent hotfix rewrote five days before launch — rewriting the very thing it guaranteed.
This does not prove Blizzard "can't"; it does show that Forever's class gameplay was not built to a settled plan — it was shaped by five weeks of Beta feedback in motion. For a server promising a "permanent home" and "a patch every four months" (IGN detail), the real test starts at launch: does the lag between statements and changes converge, and does anyone dare use the word "final" again. The one practical player takeaway: in the early weeks, treat no conclusion as permanent — go by the weekly hotfixes and the class changes page; this site's talent tool is a planner, not a DPS calculator, and in-game testing is final.
