Blizzard's biggest pre-launch class hotfix for WoW: Forever hit the live servers five days out from launch, and it reshapes two whole talent trees. Wowhead reported the batch on October 30 at 6:22 p.m. Central (07:22 October 31, Beijing time): Feral druids lose Berserk from the tree and pick up Lacerate as a new talent, Restoration's Wild Growth gains a 3-second cast time, and the Paladin tree adds six new talents or effects across Holy, Protection and Retribution on top of a dozen-plus value changes. Hunters, mages, priests, warlocks and warriors are also adjusted. Rogues and shamans get no entries at all. Launch lands November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST — November 5 Beijing time — so this is the last round of tuning anyone sees before the gates open.
Applied live, but the official write-up is missing
The framing matters first. Per Wowhead's More Information note, these are hotfixes "that have been applied to live Forever servers," and they "have not been confirmed in development notes, and are subject to change going forward." I checked the official channels: as of 08:30 Beijing time October 31, the newest hotfixes post on Blizzard's news page is still the October 16 batch (which does not cover Forever), the development-notes thread was last updated October 27, and no October 30 Forever hotfix post can be found on the official forums. Wowhead's relay is, for now, the only written source for every number below.
Live implementation does have one player-side checkpoint. The October 31 forum thread "No one but streamers like Seal Twist. Just stop it" (topic 2396904) opens with "In today's patch Blizzard got rid of the Twist of Light talent" — the changes are in the running client. Meanwhile the forum's "New Class Changes" thread (topic 2396860) links a same-day data-mining post on Reddit's r/classicwow titled "wow_forever_class_hotfixes_30_october_216_talents," the "216 talents" being the scale of the mined diff. Two framings, one batch of changes: a data-mined list on one side, spot checks by players on the other, and no official wording anywhere in between.
Druids: Berserk leaves the tree, Wild Growth gets a 3-second cast
All three specs moved, and talent positions shifted widely — Wowhead posted before-and-after tree screenshots.
Balance: Genesis doubles up, 2/4/6/8/10% periodic damage and healing across five ranks (was 1/2/3/4/5%).
Feral: Berserk removed; Lacerate is a new talent; Leader of the Pack now increases all critical strikes (was melee and ranged only); Primal Bite jumps from 26/38/59 to 42/62/77 damage and moves position; Shifting Power's cooldown drops from 16 seconds to 8. One caveat: Wowhead only says "Berserk removed" — deleted outright or converted to a baseline ability is not stated. A poster in topic 2396885 guesses baseline, then doubts the guess himself ("All druids are just immune to fear now?").
Restoration: Bloom is a new talent; Naturalist now also reduces Wild Growth's cast time and raises all damage to 2/4/6/8/10% (was 1/2/3/4/5%); Swiftmend narrows — the target must have Regrowth or Rejuvenation (previously any heal-over-time qualified); and Wild Growth now has a 3-second base cast.
Paladins: six new talents or effects across three specs
Holy: Boundless Light and Oath of Light are new talents; Divine Precision drops to 2 ranks with max-rank Holy spell hit at 8% (was 18%) and a new 20% Silence-duration reduction; Holy Power now boosts critical strike healing bonus by 10/20/30/40/50% (it used to boost crit chance); Improved Seals scales to Rank 5 at 15% (was Rank 3 at 9%); Light's Vigil no longer triggers on an enemy; Reverence drops to 2 ranks (was 3) with max-rank mana regeneration unchanged at 30%; Spiritual Focus rises to 5 ranks (was 2), capping at 70%.
Protection: Righteous Fury is learned at level 10 (was 16); Holy Shield takes a 32% damage cut, its mana cost falls from 150 to 100, and it gains a "Take Harmful Spell" flag; Improved Righteous Fury now reduces damage taken by 3/6/9% (was 2/4/6%); Iron Creed sheds 3 ranks (was 5) but max-rank threat rises to 30% (was 15%) while damage taken drops to 6% (was 10%); Sacred Duty no longer grants stamina and instead cuts Forbearance's duration by 10 seconds at max rank; Shield Specialization consolidates to 2 ranks (was 3) at the same max values; Shieldsworn and Stoicism are new talents, Swift Judgement is a new effect; Templar's Bulwark can now be magic dispelled.
Retribution: Champion of the Light goes to 5 ranks (was 3) with max-rank spell damage unchanged and a new 1-second reduction to Hammer of Wrath's cast; Conviction consolidates to 3 ranks (was 5) at 6% for all spells at max (was 5%); one talent was removed — the name is blank in Wowhead's text, and forum topic 2396904 says it was Twist of Light; both accounts stand until Blizzard words one; Turn Evil is a new ability; Two-Handed Weapon Specialization now boosts physical damage only (was all damage) and cuts threat by 20% at max rank; Vindication no longer increases attack power; and Unsealed Wrath is written up as a "new name (was Unsealed Wrath)" with a new effect — the old and new names are identical, reported here as printed.
Everyone else: Ice Lance hits for 300% with an 8-second cooldown
Hunters see a single Beast Mastery change: Pathfinding moves to Row 3 (was Row 2). Mages took the widest spread outside the two headline classes. Frost draws the most attention: Ice Lance rises from 200% to 300% bonus damage against frozen targets but gains an 8-second cooldown — the same Ice Lance cooldown that circulated as a data-mined rumor in our October 28 Hunter and Alchemy hotfix report now shows up in Wowhead's applied list; the mined Frost Blast removal and Frostbite diminishing-return change still do not appear, and Blizzard has said nothing about either. Arcane: Arcane Blast stacks 12% Intellect (was 15%), its mana-cost increase drops from 175% to 100%, and the buff lasts 18 seconds (was 15); Arcane Resilience becomes 3 ranks with rank 3 granting armor equal to 75% of Intellect and moves to Row 1; Missile Barrage moves to Row 2; Arcane Focus is removed. Fire: Improved Fireball is renamed Accelerant and also reduces the cast time of Arcane Wrath; Critical Mass caps at 6% crit on Rank 3 (was 10% on Rank 5); Improved Fire Blast moves to Row 3; Incineration caps at 10% on Rank 5 (was 6% on Rank 3). Frost's remainder: Arctic Reach also extends Ice Lance range; Ice Barrier boosts Frost damage by 15% (was 3%) with an additional 5% while shielded (was 3%); Winter's Chill raises the next Cone of Cold's damage by 20% (was 5%); Precision is renamed (was Elemental Precision) and now covers all hit chance.
Priests: Shadow Word: Death backlash rises from 10% to 30%, and Holy gains the new Holy Binding talent. Warlocks: Improved Drains now increases mana drained by Drain Mana instead of affecting Wrack. Warriors: Revenge scales with 25% attack power at all ranks.
82 posts overnight, zero blue replies
"New Class Changes" (topic 2396860) went up at 06:55 Beijing time on October 31 with a first post reading "Some big pally and druid changes." and one more line: "Rogue hello??" It reached 72 posts within roughly ninety minutes and stood at 82 posts from 40 participants when fetched during drafting — not a single blue reply among them. The pushback clusters in a few places.
Wild Growth's 3-second cast is the biggest target. "What is the logic behind Wild Growth 3s Cast?" (topic 2396902) argues that putting a cast time on a heal-over-time "contradicts" the design at the concept level, and offers alternatives: average the ticks out to 7 seconds, add a cooldown, or cut the healing outright. Feral players are angrier. "Feral Druid Completely Gutted PvE and PVP" (topic 2396878) counts Berserk's removal, Lacerate becoming a talent and a string of position drops, concluding: "Firing from the hip like this 5 days from launch is just insane and feral is paying the price." "Bait and switch?" (topic 2396870) reached 43 posts on the plea "You guys need to just let us play and you need to pick a lane. Stop making changes everyday."
Rogues draw a different kind of heat: absent from the list, without even a "rogues are fine." "Consider deleting rogues from the game" (topic 2396877) ran 16 posts, and "Who is the rogue class dev?" (topic 2396913) complains of "cold silence and shunning." Shamans are likewise absent from this batch; no concentrated protest thread has surfaced so far.
Known and unknown
Known, with sources:
- Every number above comes from the official change list as relayed by Wowhead — one media outlet only; MMO Champion and Massively Overpowered carried no matching item in feed archives through 08:17 Beijing time October 31.
- The changes are applied to Forever's live servers per Wowhead's wording, and player topic 2396904 confirms "today's patch" took effect.
- Druid and Paladin talent positions moved widely; Wowhead posted before-and-after screenshots.
- The main thread hit 72 posts in about ninety minutes and 82 posts from 40 participants at drafting time, with no blue replies.
Not announced:
- No official hotfixes post or development-notes entry covers this batch: the official news page's newest hotfixes article is October 16, and the dev-notes thread was last updated October 27.
- Whether Berserk is deleted outright or converted to a baseline ability is not announced.
- The name of the removed Retribution talent is blank in Wowhead's text; the forums say Twist of Light.
- The "new name" on Unsealed Wrath matches its old name, and its new effect is described in one Wowhead sentence.
- Whether the numbers change again is open — "subject to change going forward."
What to do before November 5
- Druids: re-plan against the new tree. A core Feral skill's very existence and position are in question, and leveling routes shift with it — check your points in our Druid talent guide and the leveling talents quick reference. The site's talent tool is a planner, not a DPS simulator — verify in game.
- Paladins: all three specs need rework. Holy's crit-healing math, Protection's threat-and-mitigation balance and Retribution's two-hander scaling all moved; for the mechanics backstory, see our Paladin eras comparison.
- Hold off on verdicts: "Feral is dead" and "Berserk is gone" both rest on unconfirmed relays. Wait for a blue post or an official hotfixes entry before calling it.
- Watch three dates: name reservations close at 23:59 Beijing time on November 3; global launch is November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST (November 5 Beijing time); and the first three raids — Barrow Deeps (10-player), Hyjal Summit (20-player) and Onyxia (40-player) — open December 9 Beijing time, where these changes get their first real test.
