Max-level builds and levelling builds are different animals: at the cap you chase output, while levelling you want every point to pay off immediately. Park the 51-point capstone builds in the library for now — this guide gives the below-30 talent chains, beta-tested, per class. Follow them as written.

Scope notes: chains come from community beta testing (NGA, TikTok guides, community write-ups, 9-15 through 10-06, cross-checked; source dates inline); blue-post mechanics are labeled. Beta numbers may change before launch — the live game governs. For endgame specs, pick a build in the builds library; the systematic class-change breakdowns live on the class changes pages.

Warrior: prot levelling is the surprise of this beta

Old wisdom said warriors level in pain; this version flips it — Protection 0/0/21: Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance on a 6-second cooldown, and Sunder's threat was rebalanced, so pulling 2-3 mobs above your level is stress-free (beta-tested 10-04). The 10-1 blue post normalized rage generation by weapon speed and added +75% bonus rage on crits — the levelling feel improved a lot. Tactical Mastery is learned outright at 14 (no talent points), and at 20 you get Victory Rush (kills restore 10% health). Respec to Fury for endgame DPS: dual-wield 15 Arms + 36 Fury, or two-hander Fury with maxed Two-Handed Weapon Specialization.

Paladin: retribution, Seal of Command at 20

A "version answer" candidate for levelling: Retribution 0/0/21, chain 20 Seal of Command → 22 Pursuit of Justice → 24 Improved Judgement → 25 Holy Arbiter → 28 Holy Judgement (community guide, 9-26). The speed variant: after Command, max Pursuit of Justice and Deflection first, then return to Holy. The level-6 baseline Holy Strike fills in active damage, and the 10-5 official preview moves Consecration to a baseline level-20 skill (no talent points; still adjustable in beta). Don't stack intellect while levelling — the Light's Grace int-to-spell-power payoff was nerfed by blue post.

Hunter: beast mastery 21/0/0, never touch the ground

The comfiest levelling tier: Beast Mastery 21/0/0. Chain (9-28 walkthrough): 10-14 Endurance Training → 15-16 Focused Fire → 17-18 Improved Revive Pet → 19-20 Pathfinding (36% Dash at 20) → 21 the pet-speed talent → 22-25 three points in the Ferocity-tier damage talents plus the eagle summon → 26-29 finish that tier plus two more in Ferocity → 30 Intimidation. (Talent names are community translations; the in-game English names govern.) Pets: vultures, bears or cats; the cat family's +54% Rapid Attack is community-measured (possibly a beta attack-speed normalization bug, subject to change). The 10-5 official preview made Aimed Shot a baseline skill that no longer clips your auto-shot timer — the ranged rotation got noticeably smoother.

Rogue: combat 0/21/0, respec subtlety at 40

Chain (CN beta guide, 10-05): 2 Cold Blood → 2 Improved Sinister Strike → 3 Lightning Reflexes; skip Improved Eviscerate — levelling rides Sinister Strike, finishers pay poorly. Blade Flurry at 30 lets you AoE two mobs. The alternative combat-riposte build (10-02 tested): go full combat after 10 and take Riposte at 20 — parry-triggered 150% weapon damage plus a 6-second disarm, excellent against humanoids. The real issue is mechanical, not talents: Blade Flurry-style AoE isn't fully implemented, so 1-40 is mediocre — the single-target ceiling arrives at max level (designers ranked rogues first, 10-02).

Priest: shadow 2/0/19, befriend your wand

Shadow 2/0/19: the classic trio of Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast and Mind Flay, with a wand workflow that feels great from 1-20. The 10-1 blue post added two baseline skills: Shadow Word: Death (unlocks at 32, mind the recoil) and Divine Spirit (30); Renew now stacks from multiple priests — group levelling heals doubled. Racial priest spells are official too: Gnome's Dazzling Flash at 10, Human's Divine Grace at 10, Night Elf's Starlight Shard at 10 — worth weighing when you pick a race.

Druid: feral/balance 0/21/0, skip bear form at 10

Balance chain (NGA 10-05): 5 points in Wrath → max the second row's 4 points (prioritize 2 points of cost reduction) → keep using rank-2 Wrath until 20, best value. Don't learn Bear Form at 10 — levelling won't use it; save the training money. Professions: leatherworking + skinning. Mind the second balance pass tested 10-06: feral cats nerfed hard (Tiger's Fury / removals), moonkin buffed massively, bear tankiness up — minor for levelling, but it reshapes your endgame direction.

Shaman: enhancement 0/21/0, totems plus shocks plus self-heals

Enhancement 0/21/0: melee enhancement with totems and self-healing. The first 10 levels are rough (high mana costs, small pools — 200-hour beta tester, 10-2), then it accelerates sharply; another camp reports the "three-shocks route feels buttery" — both voices coexist, and tight mana early is the shared consensus. The one-button totem macro (Searing → Earthbind → Stoneskin → Healing Stream) is standard loadout; copy the code from the addons & macros page.

Mage: frost 0/0/21, Blizzard can crit now

Frost 0/0/21: control plus kiting, high AoE efficiency. Tested 9-24: Blizzard can now critically strike; early on, drop both armors before AoE pulls to avoid taunt-by-damage, and use high-ground line-of-sight pulls. The Frostfire scroll user got gutted on 10-04 (damage under a third of before) — scroll-dependent AoE routes are risky now. The 10-5 official preview's Frostfire Arrow will be learnable by all specs and auto-picks the target's lowest resistance — the ice-fire hybrid matures at the cap; levelling stays frost.

Warlock: affliction 21/0/0, two lives around level 20

The class that needs a mental-health briefing: baseline spell damage was cut about 50%, so levelling before 20 is at least twice as slow — not a beginner's first character (plenty of NGA feedback). Chain: 10-14 Improved Corruption 5 → 15-16 Improved Life Tap 2 → 17-18 Suppression → 19 Improved Healthstone → 20 Drain Life. Pets inherit 100% of your hit and crit, and everything changes at 20. Choosing a spec (NGA 10-06 tests): Demonology is the safe layback pick that can even fight even-level elites; Destruction suits full-clear questers; Affliction has the highest output but wants 2-3 targets at once.
