A note on framing: this piece summarizes Wowhead's Fury expert Babyhoof's analysis — his opinions, not official positions — updated with the 9 October development notes.
Nobody needs reminding how strong the 1.12 DPS Warrior was — by Classic's 2019 run it was the undisputed best DPS in the game, because gear scaled your damage and your Rage income at the same time. Forever was always going to take a knife to that; the question was the knife work.
Rage: the right call, finally tuned in
The analysis endorses Rage normalization itself. The old formula compounded with gear, and the infamous Heroic Strike queuing bug — queuing an on-next-attack ability removed the dual-wield miss penalty from your off-hand, printing Rage — survived from Vanilla all the way to Cataclysm. Forever finally fixed it and added Furious Precision as compensation.
But the first pass generated far too little: base Rage = 3.46 × weapon speed × hand multiplier (off-hand half), ×1.3 for two-handers — leaving Warriors unable to press anything for ten-plus seconds. The crit bonus went from nothing to 75%, then to 100% the same day once Blizzard's internal metrics (skewed by a talent bug) said so. The 9 October notes then fixed several Rage-from-damage calculation bugs (absorbs mishandled, player health used instead of creature health) and rebalanced gains around a 20-40% armor assumption per level. The verdict: it now "presses rotation on cooldown without mindless dumping," and ramping Rage via crit gear is a healthy loop — but Blizzard must keep tuning both ends.
Few new toys, old debts unpaid
Compared with other classes' overhauls, DPS Warrior got very little: Victory Rush is mostly a leveling bonus; Tactical Mastery going baseline sounds great until you notice Improved Tactical Mastery's per-point refund was nerfed to match — net zero. Furious Precision is a debt-repayment talent; Flurry's cap dropped from 30% to 25%.
Three open problems get the most ink:
- Berserker Stance's +10% damage taken. Ret Paladins get immunity and self-healing, Enhancement Shamans self-heal, Survival Hunters can step to range — only Warriors pay a "melee tax" that applies to magical damage too, stacking to +15% with Death Wish.
- Stances are hard-locked to specs. Arms needs Battle (Rend/Overpower), Protection needs Defensive, Fury needs Berserker (Whirlwind) — and swapping only conserves 25 Rage while Battle Stance has no positive modifier at all. The proposal: add a Rage-proc talent to Battle Stance and make stance-dancing a playstyle instead of a punishment.
- Recklessness sits on a 30-minute cooldown. Either halve the power and the cooldown, or remove it and hand the power back — a spec-defining ability you can't press in most encounters isn't a balancing tool.
The two core asks
- Cleave relief: Warrior's fantasy is "sustain cleave like no other class," yet Cleave is expensive and eats the main-hand swing's Rage. Ask: queued Cleave/Heroic Strike swings still generate Rage at a 50% penalty (or a cost cut / extra target).
- The Sunder Armor burden: in 10/20-man content you may be the only Warrior, spending the opening five GCDs applying and then maintaining a debuff no other class pays this much for (Faerie Fire and Curse of Recklessness last longer, cost less, apply instantly). Ask: a 3-stack cap and a low-cost maintenance way.
Verdict: numerically fine in end-game PvE, but the high-APM Classic rhythm is gone; whether raid encounters feature sustained cleave, execute phases and moderate damage will decide if the spec is balanced or on a knife's edge. The good news: the Rage line — the biggest one — is being actively repaired.
