During the launch window nothing changes your feel more than your weapon: an armor gap makes you a bit squishier, a weapon gap makes every kill visibly slower. Our starter gear page lists the full inventory by faction; this post walks the same items along your leveling timeline — at each level band, which weapon to chase.

Scope notes: stats and drop rates from beta community reports (9-20 through 10-05); the live game governs; nothing here is a drop guarantee.

One rule before everything

Learn the weapon skill before you loot the weapon — one-hand axes, two-hand maces, bows and staves all have skill gates at the weapon master in a major city. Learn every type your class might use before the grind; it saves more time than anything else on this list.

Levels 8-13: class weapons and your first blues

  • 8-9 (Horde): the Wing Clipper, from the "Defend the Caravan" quest outside Orgrimmar — the earliest decent melee upgrade;
  • Level 10: the rogue class quest awards the Cunning Blade (dagger; a quest reward, not a drop); warlocks the same level should sprint the voidwalker chain — the pet matters more than any weapon;
  • 13-18 (Alliance): the Hall of Thanes owns this band — four bosses drop ten pieces, all item level 18, required level 13, with quest rewards including the Ironforge Hammer, Abyssal Flames, the Dwarven Tome and the Crypt Cloak: a full dungeon set from one run. The final boss also drops Dugan's Crescent Axe (one-hand axe — learn axes first).

Levels 18-20: two signature weapons

  • Mr. Smite's Big Hammer (Alliance, The Deadmines): required level 18, item level 23, 3.5 speed / 19.7 DPS / +11 Str +4 Agi — the physical ceiling of the early game; it carries you to 26;
  • Cruel Barb (Alliance, Deadmines final boss): required 19, item level 24, 2.8 speed / 15.5 DPS / +12 attack power, community drop rate around 15-20% — don't chain-run for it; do the quests, take it if it comes;
  • Level 20 (Horde): two Wailing Caverns quest rewards — Serpent's Swiftness (a fast bow, hunter-leaning) and the Crescent Staff (turn four gems to Nara Wildmane in Thunder Bluff; not class-locked — warriors can wield it); plus the Potstone Shortsword from the elite spider quest in Ashenvale (item level 21).

Levels 20-26: the awkward middle

This band is where weapon gaps bite. Three stopgaps: the Fang set (Wailing Caverns trash and quests — the early druid/rogue kit); the Rot Guts trade from the Wetlands elite for a strong ring (20-30, good for everyone — but the exchange NPC, the Green Wardens' agent at 56,41, is Alliance-only; Horde buys the finished ring on the AH); and for blacksmiths the crate blueprint line — loot "Pillaged Crates" in Redridge for merchant favor, 30 tokens buy a low-tier blue plan (a full 10-20 set).

Levels 26-31: the Wetlands blue gun, both factions

The Wetlands excavation final-boss blue gun closes the band for everyone. Two notes: it is the three-way reward of the Titan Relic quest, not a direct drop (moved to quest acquisition in the 10-1 patch); and the final boss is around 31 — don't bring a level-20 group, 28+ is comfortable. Hunters have a separate level-20 starter set (Solomon's Cozy Hat, the Glowing Lizard Cape, the Bloodstained Bodice, Drybite Bracers, Fang gloves, Cookie's Spyglass, Sylvanas' Seal) — details on the starter gear page.

Alliance's 20-26 stretch is genuinely thinner than Horde's — a recognized beta-state gap; whether the live game patches it remains to be seen. Which dungeons to run when lives in the dungeon cheat sheet and the per-level sheets.
