The Classic Shaman Discord — nearly 80,000 members strong — locked its doors about 37 hours before WoW: Forever's launch. At 5:37 p.m. Beijing time on November 3 (1:37 a.m. PST), moderators set the entire server to read-only, shutting down posting in every channel to protest Forever's pre-launch shaman changes. Thirteen hours later, at 6:28 a.m. Beijing time November 4, the doors opened again — and not one change to the class came with them.

The trigger was the removal of Lava Burst. The November 2 development notes locked in the final tuning pass before launch: Elemental loses Lava Burst in exchange for a passive that adds 5% crit to lightning spells, and Restoration's Riptide doubles its cooldown to 12 seconds while losing its initial direct heal. Enhancement had no ability deleted outright, but the moderators' bill of grievances runs just as long — from Windfury Weapon's standing to gearing routes — and it turned into the 13-hour lockdown below. The itemized tuning list is in our earlier report: Rogues Get Shank, Lava Burst Removed, Riptide Cooldown Doubles: WoW Forever's Final Tuning Pass Before Launch.

The Whole Server Went Read-Only, Mists Players Included

The lockdown spared nobody. The server is the gathering point for shamans across every classic version — Classic Era, Mists of Pandaria, Season of Discovery and now WoW: Forever — with rotation, leveling and gearing discussion for close to 80,000 members. Channels with nothing to do with Forever went read-only too. The lockdown announcement gave one reason: community feedback is being completely ignored, and class fantasies are being destroyed.

About eight hours in (9:33 a.m. PST, 1:33 a.m. Beijing time November 4), the moderation team laid out its thinking in a follow-up post: the lockdown was not blackmail, but an attempt to be heard after weeks of feedback through proper channels went nowhere; the server would reopen regardless of the outcome. They also stressed the complaint is not about damage output — hybrid taxes would be tolerable if the class came out with a coherent fantasy and a playstyle that actually feels like a shaman. The dispute is about design intent and class feel.

The Moderators' Bill of Grievances, Spec by Spec

Enhancement's complaint: Windfury Weapon will no longer be the primary raid imbue, which cuts against the two-handed enhancement fantasy, while spell power and intellect gear paired with Flametongue comes out ahead — and the Maelstrom Weapon and intellect changes pour fuel on that fire. Elemental's: Blizzard has said outright that only one of Lava Burst and Chain Lightning could stay, and Chain Lightning won — leaving Elemental without a second spell school to fall back on in PvP or against nature-immune mobs, with Chain Lightning's mana cost keeping it barely worth casting on single target, a two-button rotation, a Flame Shock reduced to an upkeep DoT with no interactions, a Water Shield that burns charges even when crits proc it, and no way to project totems at range after the Totemic Projection change. Restoration's: Riptide without its upfront heal becomes a maintain-only hot, and the judgment call about who gets it first disappears. One overarching note ties it together: spell power gearing pushes Enhancement straight into Elemental's lane, so tuning one spec inevitably moves the other.

A Paladin Precedent, One Size Bigger

This is not the first class Discord to close in protest. In August 2025, the retail Paladin Discord locked its Retribution channels over raid performance and reopened within 24 hours — Ret paladins got a buff announcement shortly after, though Wowhead noted there was no indication the closure had anything to do with it. Last time it was a handful of channels; this time it is an entire server of nearly 80,000 people.

Reopened After 13 Hours, Zero New Tuning

The read-only flag came off at 6:28 a.m. Beijing time November 4 (2:28 p.m. PST), after 12 hours and 51 minutes. The reopening announcement was breezy in tone — the doors are open, and nobody seriously thought the Discord would stay closed for Forever's launch. Between lockdown and reopening, Blizzard published no new tuning entries, a point Wowhead's report singles out: after the development notes, the shaman numbers shipping at launch are final.

The Forums: Mockery and a Long-Form Rebuttal

The community's own verdict is split. At 10:57 a.m. Beijing time November 4, a player opened a thread titled "Shaman crashout was epic" (8 posts from 6 participants at archive time) that treats the closure as comedy and the moderators as overdramatic — some people just wanted to read leveling advice and found the doors locked.

Forty-seven minutes later came the far more serious "WoW Forever: Why Does Every Class Get Modernized Except Shaman?" (8 posts from 8 participants). Its author says they have played WoW for nearly 20 years with Enhancement as a main, and lays out the disappointment spec by spec: Elemental trades Lava Burst for passive interactions, Restoration loses Riptide's upfront heal, Enhancement keeps living on auto-attacks and procs — while warriors get damage and threat improvements, rogues get new abilities and mechanics, and paladins keep getting attention. The core question: vanilla authenticity can justify stripping shaman abilities, yet somehow never applies to anyone else. The totem system has been dismantled, unique utility has been handed out to other classes, and a shaman is supposed to command fire, earth, water and air — not just lightning, passive bonuses and proc-watching. The author adds that they had looked forward to Forever but now plan to start as a Shadow Priest instead, and asks for a rollback and a coherent direction for the class.

Neither thread had a Blizzard reply at drafting time, and the closure itself has drawn no announcement or blue post of any kind.

What Shaman Players Can Do Before Launch

  • The numbers are final: Forever launches at 07:00 Beijing time November 5, and the shaman you log into is the one that shipped. Check your build against the leveling talents quick reference; the site's talent tool is a planner, not a DPS calculator — in-game testing is what counts.
  • If you want Blizzard to hear it, the Forever board on the official forums is the channel; links to both threads are in the sources below. The development notes say a major tuning pass is expected once launch data accumulates — whether the shaman grievances make it into that pass is not announced.
  • December 9 opens Barrow Deeps (10-player), Hyjal Summit (20-player) and Onyxia (40-player) on the same day. That is when this version of the shaman gets re-judged by pull numbers.
  • The Discord itself is back to normal, with leveling and gearing discussion restored. The moderation team kept its word that the server would reopen regardless of the outcome — whether anyone picks up the grievances is a different question.
