The oldest controversy in world PvP — high-level players killing and camping low-level ones — now has an official answer for WoW: Forever: no protection planned. On the official podcast, creator Savix asked senior game designer Aggrend whether any such protection would come to PvP servers, and the answer was blunt:
"The short answer is: no. PvP occurs on a PvP server. It has been true for 22 years of this game. That's something you gotta look inward and ask yourself if you are ok with.... You may have a frustrating game session because that just happens."
An interesting contrast
Right around the same statement, China's Titan Reforged servers actually shipped such a mechanic: a PvP Protection Aura — when a player or pet 5+ levels higher kills a lower-level player, the victim gains a 1-hour aura making them immune to characters 5+ levels above them (pets included). The stated purpose is to prevent low-level players from being "camped/harassed" after one death, not to let low-level characters retaliate freely. Two product lines, two answers to the same question — which shows this is an operational choice, not a technical limit. Forever's current stance is to keep the classic rule.
What it means for players
This week is exactly when players pick servers and reserve names (reservations open October 27), so the information belongs in that decision:
- Casual players who want zero corpse-camping: pick a PvE/Normal ruleset, or accept the frustration risk on a PvP server;
- Players who want open-world tension: PvP rulesets stay untamed, including the cruel parts;
- Players familiar with Titan Reforged's protection: do not assume Forever (international) will behave the same — Blizzard has explicitly said it is not planned for now.
