Raid strength matters two months from now; in launch week, what decides whether you have fun is the levelling experience. This tier list follows the beta community consensus (compiled 10-05) across all nine classes — strong where it counts, painful where it hurts, and who each class fits.

Scope notes: this is a community tier list, not an official ranking — the live game governs. Where the community genuinely disagrees (shamans, most famously), both voices are kept. Talent chains live in the companion levelling talents post.

T1: four picks you can't go wrong with

Paladin — the version answer, and the popularity chart topper: first-day play share hit 16% overall and 17% on Horde (community stats). It takes off at 20 with Seal of Command: prot paladins got their taunt and became top-tier tanks, retribution flows since Judgement no longer consumes the seal, and holy paladins anchor group grinding. Three viable specs means the "level → cap → get invited" pipeline has no dead ends. For everyone, especially group-oriented players.

Hunter — the safest and fastest leveller; from level 10 onward your pet absorbs mistakes: tank while you shoot, fight above your level, low gear dependency. The default answer for solo, new and casual players. One version note: orc's pet-damage bonus is gone — Horde hunters now favor troll or Skyborne.

Warrior — the dark horse revived by the 10-1 rage rework (generation normalized by weapon speed). Protection levels by pulling 2-3 mobs above its level without stress, and prot is simultaneously the strongest main tank — raid slots everywhere at the cap. Fury DPS is good but single-target has been overtaken by rogues.

Shaman — the highest group-acceptance rate in the game: 20-man raids routinely bring 4-6, totem buffs are scarce, Horde-only (except the new dwarf shaman). Enhancement levelling has two voices: "the three-shock route is buttery" and "the first 10 levels are mana starvation" — the shared conclusion is it accelerates hard after 10. The best pick for solo players without a friend group.

T2: playable, but know the pain first

Warlock — two lives around level 20: baseline damage cut about 50%, so pre-20 levelling is genuinely rough; post-20 the voidwalker and deep affliction transform the experience. Healthstones and summons are raid staples, so groups want you at the cap. For players who can endure the early game for endgame standing.

Mage — top-tier at both levelling and gold farming, with portals and conjured food/water; the veterans' multi-character pick. Weaknesses: squishy outdoors, crowded endgame competition.

Rogue — designers ranked it first in single-target (official podcast, 10-02), and assassination melts five-man bosses. But levelling lacks AoE (Blade Flurry unimplemented), core skills are missing, and 1-40 is mediocre. For the patient.

T3: bring a group, or bring love

Druid — the early game hurts: nature damage cuts make 1-20 the worst stretch, and while the 9-25 hotfix buffed Wrath, solo-first druid still isn't advised. The second balance pass (tested 10-06) massively buffed moonkin and bear — a fine pick for the endgame-curious or group-backed.

Priest — steady healing employment, workable shadow levelling, and a decent wand workflow from 1-20 — just slow. Healer mains will be comfortable, and the new rule that Renew stacks from multiple priests raises its group value.

Two parting reminders: first, this reflects the beta consensus in early October — the 10-06 balance pass (cat nerf, moonkin buff) shows numbers are still moving, and live respec costs 1 silver, so don't let "wrong pick" anxiety win. Second, route and talents are separate decisions — where to go lives in the per-level route sheets, how to spend points in the levelling talents post.
