A note on framing: this piece summarizes Wowhead's Feral expert Lexolas's analysis — his opinions, not official positions. Mechanics reflect the current Beta build; numbers may still change.
Feral's signature classic trick — powershifting (cat to bear and back to refund Energy) — has been deliberately retired in Forever, replaced by two new talents: Shifting Power and Improved Shifting Power. It's a legitimized remake: what used to require a macro and deep game knowledge is now a priced, on-the-bar ability.
How it works: an instant cast converts 55% of base mana into 40 Energy; the 16-second cooldown drops to 8 seconds with 2 points in Improved Shifting Power; the cost is reduced by shapeshifting-cost-reduction effects. Three key differences from classic powershifting: no macro needed (much friendlier to newer players), it no longer removes slows and snares (a hidden bonus of the old macro is gone), and the mana cost is explicit.
What was traded away: Ferals also lost Tiger's Fury and King of the Jungle, which together provided up to 60 Energy.
PvE: a net win. The classic shift loop traded a 15% damage buff at roughly 20% uptime for Energy, and Energy is the lifeblood of the rotation — instant Energy is worth more. The analysis concludes the exchange favors PvE, with a much lower execution barrier as a bonus.
PvP: two real nerfs. First, Cat Form burst takes a hit — without Tiger's Fury and King of the Jungle's Energy, burst windows depend more on mana reserves. Second, utility Energy got more expensive: shifting cat → bear → cat now clears your stored Energy under the new Furor (contested wording — the tooltip reads more like "no Energy gained in Bear Form" than "stored Energy is wiped", and the author suspects a wording bug), so interrupting with Feral Charge or stunning with Bash now costs a global cooldown plus mana plus a Shifting Power to buy the Energy back — all things classic powershifting did incidentally.
Practical takeaways: PvE Ferals should weave Shifting Power into the rotation and take the 8-second cooldown rank; PvP Ferals need to re-time their bursts and treat mana as a resource on par with Energy. Watch the Furor wording — if it's clarified to "no gain, no wipe", the PvP verdict could improve.
