A note on timing: players dug up this activity in late September, Blizzard adjusted its rewards on October 3 and 4, and this piece reflects the state as of October 6 — details may still change during the Beta.

WoW: Forever hides a collection activity every class can play: find books scattered around the world and hand them to your faction's librarian for rewards — a bit like the mage book hunt from Season of Discovery, except this time everyone gets to join.

How it works: books are hidden across the open world, some in very safe spots and some behind a bit of risk. Turn them in to your faction's librarian — Alliance find Garion Wendell in Stormwind's Mage Tower, Horde find Owen Thadd in Undercity's Magic Quarter.

The rewards, and how they changed this week:

  • 10 books: unlocks the Friend of the Library quest for a choice of two necklaces (Erudite's Amulet or Scholarly Pendant). Both started as rare quality, but after word spread, Blizzard nerfed them to uncommon with adjusted stats on October 4 — popularity comes with a price.
  • 20 books: unlocks Greater Friend of the Library for a choice of rings, including Field Researcher's Loop. The non-caster ring was originally flagged rogue-only (suspected bug even then), and since October 3 it is available to every class; the same pass dropped its item level from 40 to 35.
  • Twenty books was a real stretch at the old level-20 cap; with the Beta cap now at 30, the grind is noticeably easier.

The mage Easter egg: handing in your first book teaches Study, which — together with Decipher Scrolls learned from a trainer at level 6 — lets you stand in the library and spend a Light Feather for a bundle of scrolls on a one-day cooldown, with more expected to unlock as you level. One warning: early in the Beta, Study misbehaved badly (repeatedly opening the Cooking profession and even hard-crashing a tester's PC). Later builds may have fixed it, so check the current state before you try.

The rewards don't touch core combat power, but they give explorers a clear set of collection goals — the book locations alone make a nice open-world tour. Plan your route alongside our dungeon atlas and the amazing places map; for post-cap leveling pace, see the leveling route.
